A
security
guard was
killed
instantly,
while his
employer
was
injured,
when they
were
confronted
by a hail
of bullets
while
responding
for a call
for help
at
Surendra
Ganesh’s
residence,
at
Wellington
Park,
Corentyne,
shortly
after
02:00hrs
on Monday.
Dead
is Arjune
Gobin,
47, of
Bloomfield
Village,
Corentyne,
while his
employer,
Rajindra
Persaud ,
Manager of
NAND
PERSAUD
& CO ,
the
largest
exporter
of extra
long grain
parboiled
rice and
white rice
in Berbice
,
sustained
an injury
to his
head as a
bullet
grazed
him.
He is
currently
in a
stable
condition
a private
city
hospital.
According
to
Vasantie
Ganesh,
called
Sandra,
she was
awakened
by a
banging
and
gunshots
shortly
before
02:00hrs.
She
alerted
her
children
Avinash,
20 ,and
Vinaya,
14,
and
telephoned
her
sibling ,
Rajindra
Persaud ,
who
resides at
Number 35
Village,
some four
miles
away.
She told
her
brother
that her
home was
under
attack.
Persaud
left his
home in
one of his
vehicles,
while his
employee,
Arjune
Gobin,
followed
in a
Mitsubishi
Pajero.
When he
reached
his
sister’s
home,
Persaud’s
vehicle
came under
fire from
the
bandits,
and he
crashed
into an
utility
pole, ran
into a
trench and
ended up
on a dam.
It was
then that
a bullet
grazed his
head.
Meanwhile,
Gobin, who
was
motoring
behind his
employer,
was shot
in the
head, and
it is
believed
that he
died
instantly.
During the
ordeal,
police
assistance
was
sought,
and it was
after
their
arrival
that the
injured
Persaud
entered
his
sister’s
home.
In the
meantime ,
Vasantie
Ganesh’s
husband,
Surendra,
who had
left their
home about
a hour
before en
route to
the Cheddi
Jagan
International
Airport,
was in the
vicinity
of Rising
Sun, West
Coast
Berbice,
when he
received a
telephone
call
informing
him of the
attack.
He
immediately
returned
home ,
where he
observed a
gaping
hole
on the
southern
wall of
the two
storey
house.
Police
said the
bandits,
about six
in number,
used a
sledge
hammer to
break into
the house.

entering
the lower
flat, the
gang fired
several
shots from
nine
millimeter
pistols.
Several
spent
shells
were
recovered
at the
scene.

time,
Sandra
Ganesh and
her
children
were in a
locked
room in
the upper
flat.
In the
upper
flat, two
of the
three
bedrooms
were
ransacked
, and the
family
reported
that
$5,500 was
missing.

Meanwhile
, at
Gobin’s
home, his
wife Jenny
Gobin,
with their
four
children,
Amoit ,
Amresh,
Ambika and
Anjanie,
recalled
hearing
the
tooting of
a car horn
shortly
after
03:00hrs ,
but did
not
venture to
look
outside.
However,
shortly
afterwards,
a relative
telephoned,
informing
her that
her
husband
was
not well,
and had to
be taken
to the New
Amsterdam
Hospital.
In company
with
relatives,
she
ventured
to the
health
institution,
where she
observed
blood at
the
entrance
of the
Emergency
Unit; and
on
entering ,
she was
told that
her
husband
was dead.
Police are
continuing
their
investigations,
and no
arrest has
yet been
made.
