Berbice River Bridge closing three times daily

Hot on the heels of the collapse of the $451M Supenaam stelling, the multi-billion-dollar Berbice River Bridge has started to act up. It is experiencing its fair share of problems. The structure which was open with much fanfare in December of 2008, joins West and East Berbice.

The main cause of worry at the moment is the Acceptor and Retractor Span, and according to a source close to the bridge, the structure was never completed to satisfaction.
This area was always of some concern and the contractors had done some remedial work during the liability period, but with little success.
The official did not say what exactly the problem is, but stated that there is also a problem with the control and the ramp.
During earlier renovations, four new motors were installed to help lift the ramp, but that was not as successful as anticipated and despite all efforts, the system has not come up to what was expected. At the moment the system is not working as it should.
The bridge is being closed three times daily, so as to allow the contractor to do further modification on the structure.
The closing times would vary each day. This new arrangement which is expected to last until next week has started to take its toll on commuters, with many expressing their disgust at the situation.
The long lines of vehicles have returned and commuters are hoping for a permanent fix to the situation.
