Kaieteur News
understands that
the rank, who is
being guarded at a
city hospital to
which he was
reportedly
admitted twice
last week, was
held following a
sting operation
conducted by the
military.
Another man,
who is said to be
from Buxton, is
also in police
custody assisting
with the
investigation.
According to
reports, the rank,
a lance corporal,
was suspected of
selling unmarked
army bullet proof
vests after a few
went missing from
base Camp Buxton .
But although he
was not caught in
the act, this
newspaper
understands that
there was enough
evidence to put
him under close
arrest.
This newspaper
understands that
checks were also
made of the stock
at base Camp
Ayanganna to
ascertain the
magnitude of the
situation.
It is reported
that he identified
a villager with
whom he was in
constant contact.
According to a
source, following
his initial arrest
a little over a
week ago, the GDF
rank was
hospitalised for a
medical condition.
However, he
managed to slip
out of the
institution but
was rearrested and
placed under
guard.
A police source
told this
newspaper that the
Buxtonian who is
currently in the
Vigilance police
station lock-ups
has denied
purchasing any of
the vests from the
soldier.
The source said
that the villager
had turned himself
over to police
after his father
was detained last
week.
According to
the source, the
investigations
raises concern
since it is now
being felt that
there are still
criminal elements
in the village who
are in the process
of regrouping.

The
source also said
it could turn out
to be another
embarrassing
episode for the
Guyana Defence
Force which is
still grappling to
recover
several
high-powered
weapons
that were
stolen from
Army Headquarters
Camp Ayanganna
last year.
