Shock, dismay and outrage were expressed as
word spread yesterday of the brutal murder of a
security guard who up until his death, worked at
the Supervisor’s Club on Silverballi Street in
Linden.
Sixty-five year-old John Evans who was well known
as Buck John, lived next door to his place of
employment. He was at work when he was killed. A
bloodied piece of four by four, with nails
embedded in it, and some bloodied zinc sheets,
upon which his bashed-in head lay, told the
gruesome tale of how the man met his demise.
Curious onlookers and friends who converged on the
scene described the act as inhuman, as many tried
to get a glimpse of Evans, a man whom they had
known for years, and whom they described as a
peaceful law-abiding citizen.
One man, who described the act as cowardly and
reprehensible, wondered out loud who could have
done such a thing.
Another remarked angrily, “Dey cruel man, who
would do dis to dis man…is another human being,
and he never trouble nobody”. Many others echoed
those sentiments.
An employee of the Supervisor’s Club, Robert
Langevine, said that early yesterday morning he
noticed the door to the club open, and the lights
still on, which he found strange, so he went to
investigate and was cruelly surprised by the sight
of John lying in pool of blood with his head
bashed in. Langevine said that the man had been
around the Club for ages, so “we had just found
something for him to do”.
According to Langevine, a small amount of cash,
which represented the day’s takings was missing,
but he was not in a position to say whether
anything else had been stolen.
He further reported that the treasurer had left
the Club after 21:00 hrs on Wednesday, but that
there were still a few persons playing games.
The Club has been undergoing repairs for just over
a month now, Langevine said, but he pointed out
that it was still ‘business as usual’ in the
afternoons after the carpenters finish working.
