One shot, two held after robbery, shootout
--East Coast residents laud cops’ rapid response
COPS, who responded promptly to a robbery scene at Vryheid’s Lust Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara yesterday, shot one man and apprehended another two.

Police said that about 12:45 hrs, Jaiprakash Shivdass, called “Roger”, a taxi driver of Dasrat Street, Triumph, was robbed at gunpoint of $10,000, a cellular phone and his motorcar.

Shivdass was reportedly dropping off a passenger in the village, when three robbers pointed a gun at him and struck him in the face. They then relieved him of his cash, phone and vehicle.

It was reported that while the robbers were escaping in the young man’s vehicle that the Police arrived on the scene

The gunmen, in their haste to escape capture by the Police, crashed the hijacked motorcar into a stall. They quickly abandoned the vehicle and then fled on foot into the neighbouring village of South Better Hope.

The Police were in hot pursuit of the robbers, when there began an exchange of gunfire. It was during this shootout that Michael Mason, 23, of Lot 139 Charlotte Street, Georgetown was reportedly hit and wounded.

Mason is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and under Police guard.

Shivdass, the injured taxi driver, was treated at the institution and sent away.

Police said that during their investigations yesterday, they searched the premises of the man, who was being dropped off by Shivdass and discovered 840 grammes of cannabas sativa (marijuana).
The damaged Suzuki Swift motorcar was towed away by the Police yesterday.

Residents of South Better Hope and Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, were loud in their praise of the Police yesterday for their quick response, which led to the apprehension of suspected robbers. (Michel Outridge)
