| A
man is in police custody, following the discovery of a body early
yesterday morning in a house at Block “CC” Mon Repos, East Coast
Demerara. Dead
is Ravinder Singh, 28, a carpenter of Annandale Embankment, also on
the East Coast Demerara, who had reportedly spent the night in the
home along with the caretaker now in police custody.
A
source close to the dead man said that his body was discovered by the
caretaker, lying on the floor. It bore no marks of violence, but when
his relatives arrived at the scene, they recalled that when the police
turned him over, there was blood coming from his mouth.

Dead:
Ravinder Singh
Police also removed bottles and a bowl containing a strange substance
from the scene, the source said. Neighbours recalled that
earlier in the day, other men had been at the house cooking, drinking
alcohol and having fun, as they would normally do at weekends.
The company went home later in the evening, leaving Singh and the
caretaker behind.

The caretaker said that when he awoke yesterday morning he saw Singh
on the floor and tried to wake him up, but got no response. Soon
after he heard someone calling at the gate. It was near 7:00
hrs, and Singh’s workmates had come to enquire about
him. On being told that he was dead, the men telephoned
his mother Bibi Amina Singh who lives at Annandale.
Expressing
shock at the news of his death, Singh’s mother recalled that she
left home early Sunday morning to attend Church and asked him to
prepare lunch in her absence. He indicated to her that later in
the evening he would be going to a wake at Mon Repos. However,
when she returned home around 14:00 hrs she found that Ravinder had
cooked a meal of chowmein, but had already left the home. She
never saw him alive again.
Weeping, she lamented what a wonderful son he was, and wished it had
not happened. Asked whether he had been experiencing any
problems lately, another relative said he and his girlfriend had
broken off lately, but that did not seem to be having a devastating
effect upon him.
Besides his mother, Singh leaves to mourn his father, Ramdeo Singh,
one brother who resides abroad, and one sister, Sonia.
A post mortem is to be conducted on Wednesday.
