Yesterday, a Lance Corporal of the Guyana
Police Force and a taxi driver were granted bail
after being charged with receiving in excess of
$6M worth in stolen excavator parts.
Lance Corporal Heralall Seeram was first to appear
before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson
at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on Monday last (April 26) he
received a stolen item (one Hydraulic pump valued
at $3.5M), the property of Suresh Jagnandan.
The charge was indictable and the accused was not
required to plead.
He was represented by Attorney Patrice Henry who
in his bail application told the court that his
client is currently a serving member of the Guyana
Police Force and has made a significant
contribution to that entity, more so to the court
and its environs.
Henry sought to explain to the court that when
Seeram is not on duty, he drives a taxi in the Mon
Repos area.
According to Henry, on the day in question,
someone simply paid his client a taxi fare to drop
the item off at an establishment at Better Hope
East Coast Demerara.
He said his client, being an officer of the law,
would not know that the item was stolen and still
up to carry it to a location.
The police prosecutor did not object to bail and
noted that the story which was told was indeed
what transpired.
Bail was granted to the tune of $75,000. Seeram is
expected to make his next court appearance on June
2nd.
And Matthew Jupiter of Britton Street, Plaisance,
was charged with receiving stolen property. It is
alleged that on April 26, he received one filter
stand, valued at $1M, 1 computer box worth $1.8M
and one starter valued at $150,000.
He was represented by Attorney Gwendolyn Bristol.
In her bail application, Bristol told the court
that her client is a father of six and is a taxi
driver. She said too that her client was merely
hired to take the parts to the Better Hope
establishment.
She added that when her client arrived at the
location where he was supposed to drop the items
off, the police approached him.
According to Bristol, her client even opted to
take the police back to the point where he made
the pick-up with the hope of finding the person
who gave him the items.
Once again the police prosecutor did not object to
bail, which was granted to the tune of $75,000. He
will also return to court on June 2.
According to the police, during Monday night,
acting on a tip-off, ranks went to Annandale on
the East Coast of Demerara where they recovered a
hydraulic pump, a starter and a computer box that
were taken off an excavator after five men, two of
whom were armed with a handgun and a knife, had
held up a watchman.

According to reports, the owner of the stolen
parts who had accompanied the police to the
location, first observed a battery lead that he
had personally made.
With this in mind, the police interrogated the
occupants of the Annandale house and it was not
long before they confessed to having the stolen
parts in their possession.
